Why do girls drop out of school?

Teenage girls in India face multiple pressures. Poor families often need their children to help with farm chores like tending animals or planting crops. Even small fees for books or paper may be out of reach. Older girls might be required to look after younger brothers and sisters while the parents are away working. In the worst cases–and even though it is illegal–girls may be forced to marry at a young age.

Development Innovation Foundation (DIF) has worked in rural pockets of India for years. We understand the pressures that families face and the reasons why many girls don’t continue their education. We’re tackling the root causes and enabling families to keep their girls in school.
